Rome - otherwise known as The Eternal City - is the perfect destination for ultimate romance. With a charming historical ambiance, Rome is a stunning setting for a destination wedding, honeymoon or a romantic retreat. We visited the City last week to review a collection of boutique hotels.
Our first stop was Hotel Locarno - a unique hotel with a popular cocktail bar, perfectly located near the Piazza del Popolo. Oozing an antique charm, the hotel boasted original features and stunning decor at every turn. The original birdcage lift and stunning original ceilings were particularly unique and memorable features. The hotel has a very loyal following of artists, writers and actors who return time after time to enjoy the hospitality of the owner and her daughter who have furnished the hotel with antiques from their own home.
Our second stop was the impressive Jumeirah Grand Hotel, situated on the famous Via Veneto (home to embassies and several well known American hotels). This hotel and it's stunning spa did not disappoint; the highlight for us was the Royal Suite, at a casual €15,000 per night, however there is space to accommodate up to 30 guests for a drinks reception.
Finally, we stopped at the Gran Meliá. Set on a small hill, the hotel is adjacent to the Vatican walls, boasting fantastic views over Rome. It's chic modern ambiance was felt throughout the resort, with beautiful ornate plasterwork at every turn. The highlight was definitely the stunning terrace views and the amazing bathroom which boasted a giant 'sink style' bathtub.
When in Rome, we took the obvious opportunity to visit some iconic tourist spots. The Vatican was an impressive sight - with huge crowds gathering to catch a glimpse of the Pope! If you have had your fill of city sights, or want to escape the summer heat, we would recommend a day trip to nearby Frascati and the Old Minardi Winery.
