Looking for the perfect curve of white sandy beach, with turquoise seas and palm trees? Whether you’re looking for a honeymoon or wedding destination – the Bahamas is an idyllic haven for any couple.
The Bahamas are the most accessible part of the Caribbean, with 8 hour direct flights from London most days. Nassau is the focal point for the very best hotels and is a launch pad for visiting more remote islands nearby. The pretty Abaco Islands are situated to the north and the Exuma Islands to the south, home to Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage and David Copperfield. The islands are also known for mid-ocean sandbanks, iguanas, crystal-clear water and stunning white beaches.
We visited earlier this month to see the new £3.5 billion Baha Mar resort and casino before it opens in June. Comprised of five glamorous and unique hotels, the resort has plenty of accommodation to choose from, alongside a spa, golf course, animal sanctuary and casino to keep you entertained. Baha Mar works in synergy with the other two major resorts in Nassau; Sandals Resort for couples just a mile to the north, and the family oriented Atlantis of Paradise Island 5 miles to the south.
Our second stop was a gem on Nassau’s North West coast, close to Love Beach. One of Nassau’s best kept secrets, the Compass Point Beach Resort boasted a colourful collection of wooden beach huts and villas on stilts. If you’re looking for a quiet retreat, unique from grand American-style resorts, Compass Point is the perfect haven.
If you’re looking for a resort which oozes grand luxury, Atlantis on Paradise Island is perfect for a wedding or honeymoon. With over 20 million gallons of fresh and saltwater lagoons and pools – this resort is the ultimate waterscape. Atlantis is the largest open-air marine habitat in the world, with over 50,000 animals in the lagoons and displays. One of our favourite features was “the Dig” – a maze of underwater passageways providing a journey through ancient Atlantis.
If you’re looking for an adults only resort, where you can relax and unwind in peace, Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort is the ultimate retreat. The all inclusive, couples hide-away is just 10 minutes from the airport, close to the new Baha Mar resort. A truly magical place for a wedding, choose to have your wedding ceremony on the beach or private island surrounded by tropical flowers and palm trees.
If you’re looking for a private and more remote experience, then Treasure Cay is 100 miles North of Nassau. Best known for its frequently photographed lighthouse in Hope town, the island’s remote beach has been voted “World’s Best” by National Geographic. The Bahama Beach Club in Treasure Cay offers personalised wedding consultants, luxurious condominium accommodation and an intimate setting for the perfect wedding.
A tip from the locals – make the most of “hurricane season”. Peak season here is November to April, but outside those months you can enjoy better prices and quieter beaches as it is considered hurricane season. The risk of hurricanes here is lower than in Florida, and if one does strike, the larger hotels are well equipped to deal with it with minimal interruption to your holiday.
