TREES & PLANTING ● The Lakes by Yoo have created an arboretum with a mixture of specimens, filled with trees donated to the Group Chairman and his wife as wedding gifts. These trees are managed within a wildflower meadow and will over time develop into a mature woodland area. ● Yew trees at The Lakes are pruned every September so that all the new year's growth is captured, with offcuts sent to a cancer research charity where they are later processed and used to make life-saving breast cancer medication. ● Elm trees on one of the estate’s islands are free of Dutch elm disease, so samples are taken to Kew Gardens where they are propagated to grow future English elm trees and keep the population in a healthy existence. ● There is a row of English oak trees that have been planted in the Arboretum to offset the loss of the ash trees which will be removed due to ash dieback disease. ● The only planting on the wider estate is of species indigenous to the United Kingdom. ● Any felled trees are converted into bark chippings, which are later turned into habitats or used around the estate. ● This year, The Lakes are taking part in the Queen’s Green Canopy, an initiative in honour of the Platinum Jubilee and to increase and protect the UK’s native tree cover. The estate has selected a heritage parkland oak from a tree named “Triple Trunk”, which is about 400 years old. The estate team hope that the tree will take after its parent tree and become a specimen oak tree in the future. As part of this initiative, The Lakes will also be planting a sweet chestnut and a sycamore within the arboretum which will be added to the green canopy database. WILDLIFE & ANIMALS ● There is a specially managed area of the estate designated for herons which ensures that the birds are undisturbed during their nesting and breeding times. ● Hives of honey bees feed on the wildflower meadows.
