About Smedmore House

Smedmore House is a very special, exclusive Dorset manor house for Weddings and Civil Ceremonies. With sea views, the timeless beauty and friendly atmosphere of Smedmore House helps create an unbelievably romantic, and magical country wedding.

Smedmore House is licensed for Civil Ceremonies. These can take place either in one of 5 elegant rooms inside the house – the Front Hall, Dining Room, Drawing Room, Cedar Room and Inner Hall -or outside in the grounds. The Summer House in the Walled Garden has a licence but many couples prefer to make their vows in the avenue with its views to the sea – and then to complete the formalities inside the house.
The lawn at the front of the house makes an excellent marquee site with the backdrop of the Georgian house and with sea views to one side and the rolling hills on the other. The walled garden to the side of the house offers a delightfully sheltered spot for your drinks reception among the many exotic plants.
Smedmore House hosts about 12 larger marquee wedding each year and also many smaller mid-week ceremonies followed by a short drinks reception.

It is expected that anyone having a weekend wedding will also take the accommodation within the house for a minimum of two nights. The main house sleeps 16 and there is now the additional option of the Garden Wing for a further 3 couples.

Smedmore House has a recommended list of suppliers for both catering and marquees.

FAQs

Smedmore is always rented on an exclusive basis which means that it is yours for the time you are there.

Yes. Five rooms in the house are licensed for Civil Ceremonies together with the Summer House in the Walled Garden. The registrar is also happy to conduct ceremonies elsewhere in the grounds - our Avenue with views to the sea is particularly popular - and then conduct the short legal part inside the house.

You can certainly have the wedding ceremony outdoors.

We do not charge corkage and are happy for you to bring your own wine.

Smedmore has a list of recommended caterers but we recognise that on occasion you may have requirements that these cannot meet. In these circumstances we are happy for you to bring your own caterers but we do charge a fee for this.

Marquees usually go up the day before the wedding and couples are able to start decorating in the morning. It is also possible to rent an extra day to erect the marquee early ie on the Thursday. This incurs an extra rental fee as it means we cannot rent the house to anyone else on that day.

The reception needs to finish at 12 midnight.

You are allowed to play music until 11.30 at normal party decibel levels. After that, you have to turn it down to 85 decibels. For info : A normal function band will usually reach somewhere around 110db with most able to accommodate sound limits of around 85-95db. Obviously sound levels depend on a range of things including instrumentation, the size of the band and also noise from the crowd which contributes to decibel levels.

No sadly not because of the livestock in the fields nearby.

No but you can use rose petals and rice.

Outdoors and in the marquee if your Fire Risk assessment allows.

Yes there is a special bedroom in the house that is usually used by the bridal couple.

The main house sleeps 16 in 8 bedrooms. Further accommodation for 5-6 is available in the Garden Wing for payment of an extra fee.

There is lots of accommodation available locally. It is a holiday region and so full of B & Bs and small hotels.
