Your engagement ring is a special and precious keepsake. It will forever serve to remind you of the start of your greatest ever adventure, and as such you want to ensure that you keep it in pristine condition. Keeping your hands clean with hand sanitiser is imperative for many, especially with the coronavirus pandemic. However, many are worrying about how chemicals in hand sanitiser and cleaning products could affect their rings.

Fear not! Here is our guide to keeping your engagement ring safe from hand sanitiser...

Caring for your engagement ring

Know the Risks

First of all, it’s important to be aware of what the potential pitfalls of increased hand hygiene might be. Although you may not see any damage immediately, there are still risks to your engagement ring. Particularly with white gold, there is a chance that the beautiful finish may wear at a greater rate if frequently exposed to hand sanitisers or detergents, and it’s unlikely to return.

As well as this, there is the possibility that by frequently exposing your ring to cleaning agents, you may be weakening its structure and running the risk of losing the gemstone.

Don’t Panic - and Don’t Stop Washing Your Hands!

It’s perfectly natural that this has made you question your cleaning routine, but don’t worry - you can easily avoid these risks. The first thing to do is make sure that you keep washing your hands, as your health and the health of those around you is top priority.

To preserve your ring, there are a couple of simple things you can do. Firstly, if possible, remove your ring when washing your hands or using hand sanitiser, clean them thoroughly and wait for the cleaning agent to dry fully before putting the ring back on. If you can’t remove your ring, the next best option is to make sure you avoid getting any sanitiser or soap directly on the ring.

Keep it Clean!

In order to preserve the condition of your ring, one important thing to do is to gently clean it on a weekly basis. You can use warm water and just a small amount of dishwashing soap to do so.

Another handy tip is to make sure that you look after the ring when doing any household cleaning, or anything else which might expose it to damaging chemicals. Wearing gloves whilst doing any of these activities will make sure that no harm can come to your ring.

By being careful and, wherever possible, avoiding direct exposure to cleaning agents, you can ensure that your stunning engagement ring is protected.
