Wedding Day FAQ:  Should I Cover-Up or Show Off My Tattoo on My Wedding Day?

Should I Cover-Up or Show Off My Tattoo on My Wedding Day?

Tattoos are very personal.  Choosing whether you show them or hide them on your wedding day is a very individual choice that only you can decide.  Some brides or grooms may want to show off their tattoos as they are meaningful and part of who they are.  Others may decide they want to cover up their tattoos because they feel they don't match the style of their dress. A few brides may only want to cover up for the photographs.  Many don’t intentionally hide their tattoos at all; they may naturally be covered by their dress or hairstyle.

Choose whatever you feel most comfortable with.  Remember, your wedding is about the love that you share as a couple and your partner loves the skin you're in already!

How can I show off my tattoo?

The best way to really show off your tattoo is to choose a dress that accentuates your tattoo placement.  Opt for low necklines, low backs or shorter sleeves.  When picking out your dress, you can ask local bridal stores for guidance on the best wedding dress features to display your tattoos.

You could even choose to have a boudoir shoot on the morning of your wedding. You'll be sure to get some great photos showing off all of your tattoos.

What are the best ways to cover up my tattoo?

The cheapest option is to buy specialist makeup to cover it up yourself. If you are purchasing the product yourself, choose a durable and long-lasting product that won't rub off or turn translucent. Also, you may need to use a setting powder to ensure it stays put.

If your tattoo is large, very dark, or in a hard-to-reach place, your best option is to get your tattoo covered up by a professional makeup artist. Ask your make-up artist if they can help with the cover-up during your consultation. You should always check that it's safe to apply the product beforehand. Remember, this is even more important if the tattoo is fresh!

Whatever you choose, make sure to do at least one trial run before the big day!

For those who don't want the hassle of covering with makeup, you can opt for a wedding dress with long sleeves or a high back/neckline.  Again, bridal store teams can help you with choosing the perfect dress for you. Alternatively, if you just want to hide the tattoo for the photographs, ask your photographer if they are happy to Photoshop the images for you and it might just save you the time, effort and stress on the big day.

How can I incorporate my tattoos into our wedding?

If you love your tattoos and want to really show them off, consider incorporating them into your wedding day itself! Choose tattoo-inspired designs on your invites, stationery and wedding decor.  You could even opt for a tattoo style wedding cake!  How about including a temporary tattoo or henna station for you and your guests? For a more personal touch, you and your partner could get matching tattoos, or even choose to get tattooed wedding rings.
