Ever wondered about what 'something blue' to have on your wedding day? This month, gemologist Gemima has given us some industry insights into the types of blue stones that could become the perfect 'something blue' for your big day:

Something old -  got him, something new - the dress, something borrowed - your mothers diamond earrings, now something blue… When it comes to tradition and objects of good luck, is there anything more beautiful than a good luck charm we give ourselves?

Although you are about to embark on a new adventure as a duo of two, what’s to say you can't celebrate your history of being an independent woman? Not the Thursday night drinks kind of celebration but one that you can keep on you as a good luck charm into your married life - your something blue.

Blue gemstones are a beautiful opportunity to create a meaningful piece of jewellery for yourself without dipping into the joint house fund.

When it comes to blue gemstones, you are never short of options. Sapphire, a royalty favourite. Tanzanite, a precious gemstone only mined from Tanzania and slowly becoming an investment commodity. Aquamarine, a beautiful light blue watery gem. Blue topaz, a treated gemstone from a colourless gem to a bright intense blue. Lapis Lazuli, an earthy mineral with freckles of gold - the list is endless.

As well as creating a memory of independence for yourself in a beautiful piece of jewellery there is also a good luck charm in the stones themselves. Blue topaz is often given as a celebration of your fourth wedding anniversary from the belief of the ancient greeks that the gemstone topaz brings strength into relationships and encourages prosperity.  Blue Topaz is also the birth stone for November.

Blue sapphires are adored by the royals, our Duchess of Cambridge’s 18 carat oval sapphire inherited by William from his beloved mother, Princess Diana, is probably a little large to give to yourself, but blue sapphires are a definite possibility! Sapphires come in every colour under the sun, but the blue sapphires are the most popular amongst bridal and engagement jewellery. Sapphires are incredibly durable so you can wear them every day like diamonds without worrying about them being damaged.

Creating a piece of jewellery for yourself is a creation of passion and celebration. With such a wide display of blue gemstones to choose from there is a stone and a design for every bride and every budget. Don't forget about your something blue, and never forget about you.
