Trend alert! Projection mapping is officially the latest way to add a whole new world of entertainment and visual creativity to your wedding day. Projection mapping allows you to project bespoke video and images onto any object or building, whatever the shape or size. The effect is captivating and is guaranteed to amaze your guests. Here, we look at five ways that projection mapping can add incredible, memorable moments to your big day.

1. Projection mapped wedding cake

When projection specialists Motion Mapping first displayed a tiered cake with projection mapping at The National Wedding Show, it went down a storm. Nearly 100 million people have since viewed the amazing cake across different online channels - take a look and judge for yourself!

Motion Mapping’s Stuart Harris says the images used for a wedding cake display can be anything you want. It could be a theme you both enjoy or something more personal to you, including videos, photographs and graphics. “The result is a remarkable centrepiece to any wedding reception," says Stuart. "It’s almost a shame to eat the cake, but it tastes as good as it looks!”

2. Vibrant VJ wall

When the lights go down, and the music starts, projection mapping on the venue interior wall creates exotic and exciting VJ effects that get people in the mood for dancing. Your guests will feel a million dollars as they celebrate on the dancefloor.

Because this technology works in 3D, it “warps” around any surface and shape of your venue to create something entirely magical.

3. Interior theme displays

You don’t have to stop at a VJ wall projected around the dancefloor area. You could arrange for projection mapping of the entire interior! Imagine a huge marquee with the walls and ceiling displaying your chosen wedding theme.

This interior concept has been used in large venues and can create some seriously standout moments. Imagine red rose petals falling from the ceiling and down the walls during your first dance, or your reception room transforming into a picturesque forest landscape or mountain range. If Las Vegas is your favourite destination, why not have the city’s famous skyline all around? Anything is possible - even fish swimming around in a tank, if that’s your thing!

4. Transform the front of your wedding venue

Projection mapping can be at its most powerful when working across the façade of a large building. The front of your wedding venue can showcase the most amazing effects, with graphics working with or around windows, pillars, doors and the roof line. It’s all done using clever software and hi-tech projectors, but the equipment is discreet, and the operators will be out of the way.

Imagine the surprise on your guests’ faces when they arrive for an evening reception to be greeted by the projection display! It's truly a unique feature that sets the tone for the rest of your special evening.

Stuart Harris says its possible to projection map onto any objects, and he should know. Recently, he created a visually stunning display onto Stonehenge while legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold performed a set.

5. Let there be fireworks

At the end of your reception, as you’re leaving the venue, why spend money on a noisy firework display? Instead, get a vivid firework show projection mapped onto the front of the venue, with sound. It’s the perfect backdrop to the end of your day, and you and your guests will remember it for years to come.

Top tip: speak to the experts about your ideas

Stuart says most things are possible with modern projection mapping, so don’t hold back with your creative ideas. “At Motion Mapping, we work closely with each client, be it an individual or their wedding event organiser.

“We take on board all their requests, offer up some creative solutions, and once they're completely happy, we put the graphics and sequences into production. The results are a true reflection of what the bride and groom will have wanted, bringing something unique and inspiring to their special day.”
