Out of all the tasks you need to complete for your wedding day, choosing your perfect wedding cake is one of the things you and your partner can do together.

The choice of cakes can seem endless: from victoria sponge to fruit cake, royal icing to buttercream. Don't be alarmed at where to start though. Follow our top tips to ensure you find your perfect cake for your perfect day.

That all important part - Flavour! The cake needs to taste just as delicious as it looks.

Rich Fruitcake - always a hit with guests and brides alike. The best choice of cake for sending out to your guests who are unable to come to your wedding.

Table Mini-Cakes - have some mini cakes made which will sit in the middle of each table. Your wedding guests can then help themselves and it adds another dimension to the dessert course. A great ice breaker on each table as well.

Mini Wedding Cakes

Terrific Tiers - have you considered having your tiered cake made from different flavours on each tier? Look at mixing a bottom layer of fruitcake and then having a carrot cake above, with a luscious lemon cake to finish on top. Amazing!

Keeping to Tradition - of course the most popular cake is still probably the classic tiered cake with a white or ivory soft icing, accompanied with sugar or fresh flowers.

If you are wanting to go for a vintage style wedding, this trend for wedding cakes is still very much popular with brides looking at more effortlessly styled vintage cakes - just think of lace, pewter shades, muted colours and pearls.

When thinking about decoration to go with your wonderful vintage cake, look for big ruffled flowers in a soft colour - open roses and peonies are great to achieve this vintage feel.

Adding lace or an iced lace pattern directly to the cake, will set your vintage theme of perfectly. Drape edible pearls over each tier, or have them placed around your cake stand.

Have a look at these great additions or replacements for a wedding cake:

Dessert Tables & Sweet Buffets - display your wedding cake (if having one) on a table and complement it with a varied range of sweet treats and mini desserts. Try presenting the sweets in jars, with ribbons to match your colour theme.

Themed Cakes - Looking for something a bit quirky? A bespoke cake allows you to let your imagination run wild so think about things that you and your partner enjoy - do you have a love for animals or the countryside? How about having your cake adorned with toy animals or wellies! Why not create a themed cake to represent your honeymoon destination?

Cake Pops - a great invention: bite-sized bakes on a stick. Can be made in an array of colours, flavours and designs. Display them on a stand next to your wedding cake. Hint - these work really well as wedding favours too!

Ombre Cake - Never heard of these? Meaning "Shaded" in French, these designer cakes appear to be just a simple, elegant, tiered wedding cake. However...when you cut into the cake, the inside is hiding a secret layered sponge tinted in colours which match your flowers. Amazing!

To create the cake of your dreams, you need to be sure that you have chosen the right person to make it.

A few things to consider:

Look at pictures of cakes they have designed before.
Don't be pushed into going for a cake which 'isn't you' - the cake is often the centrepiece, so needs to be right.
Take along fabric swatches, your dress details (if your partner is not going!) and stationery.
Arrange a tasting session and sample a selection of the companies cakes.
