Once you have had your fill of historic monuments and impressive buildings, take a train (3 euros, 30 mins) out of Rome to Frascati for a tour of the town and the winery at the Old Minardi Farmhouse. Nestled on the edge at one of the volcanic hills surrounding the city, this charming little town enjoys cooling breezes in the summer months and incredible views across vineyards, olive groves and fields back towards Rome.
Our guide, Dominique Minardi, met us from the station for a walking tour of the town before heading to the winery. The tiny estate has been in her husband’s family for generations and they now make more of an income from showing visitors how olive oil and the local wine is made. The tour finishes with wine tasting in their cool “cave” below the farmhouse, followed by a traditional lunch in the town.
