Australia becomes the 25th country to recognise same-sex marriage after passing a bill to legalise marriage equality.
The almost unanimous vote follows a recent national postal survey, where 61% of 12 million people who responded were in favour of the change in law.
The Prime Minister declared, following an emotional debate at Parliament house in Canberra, that “This is Australia; fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect for everyone.”
The vote was passed with only four in opposition - incredible! Members celebrated with tears of joy as they let the moment sink in.
