Polhawn Fort provided us with the perfect canvas to construct our wedding, and even though the weather wasn't the brilliant blue skies I might have thought I wanted it was the most fantastic few days, and our guests are still raving about the experience and I just want to go back and do it all again!
With Polhawn you can do what you want how you want! We had guests coming from all over the world many of whom knew no one else except us, so we opted for a 'night before the wedding' BBQ that they all came to so they could meet and mingle and explore the fort...and help us get decorated! Far from being stressful this was so much fun, to see them all before the big day and to be able to remember their amazement as they walk across the drawbridge and see the fort properly for the first time. Trust me, their jaws were quite literally dropping.
We were able to put together all of the pieces of the wedding the way we wanted. My parents brought all the wine and champagne from France and with no corkage this was a super cost efficient way to go. We used a caterer recommended by the fort to serve all our drinks which they did as part of their catering for the day. They they're decorated our tables exactly how we showed them we wanted.
We chose the music we and our guests wanted for our evening dancing and used the Fort sound system to have a brilliantly bespoke disco (I was most worried about this aspect, not having a band, but it worked a treat and the dancefloor was packed)
The accommodation at the Fort was one of the main plus points for us, all our immediate family and some close friends were able to stay there with us, plus some extras in campervans in the car park! Having a relaxed breakfast on the morning of the wedding day with our absolute favourite people was a highlight...and even the slightly hungover bacon sandwiches then next day tasted all the better for having everyone there.
We chose to hire the cleaning service for both mornings, this was a good idea.
We also made full use of the staff to move furniture and to get the hall ready- this was invaluable. Apart from the catering we did all the rest ourselves, the flowers were collected from a local grower and my family did the arrangements, a friend did extra disco lights, others helped us set up a photo booth, made flower hoops for the ceremony backdrop, we sourced and set up our own evening cheese board and an old friend acted as wedding day coordinator.
It was the option to be able to make it really our day without being told what to do that made us choose the Fort. The private beach and the cannons and the stunning interior and the amazing grounds and the beautiful roof top terrace may have also played a part!!
I would suggest Polhawn for someone who is excited about the idea of doing things themselves, or has a clear idea of how they would like it to be and are willing to find the suppliers that will do it for them. You can make it as much (fireworks, icecream carts, harpists) or as little (great food, a ton of wine and all your friends and family) as you like.
The Fort information pack and website are incredibly detailed and the team are so helpful. I lost count of the number of emails I sent with questions, they were all answered promptly and politely.
They also have a facebook group you will be invited to when you have a confirmed booking. This is a source of so much support and knowledge from all the other brides and brides to be and was really very helpful to me.
Go and visit. You will not regret it!
