A honeymoon in Portugal is a great option; with miles and miles of sun-kissed beaches, fantastic seafood, a fascinating history and culture, as well as the cosmopolitan hubs of Lisbon and Porto, there is so much to explore. There are also a number of festivals on offer throughout the year such as Lisbon’s Festa de Santo António or Porto’s Festa de São João, world class golf resorts in the Algarve, 800km of stunning coastline and hundreds of picturesque hillside villages. To make matters even more appealing, honeymoon Portugal is less than a 3 hour flight away!
Portugal ticks all the boxes in terms of the dream honeymoon destination: guaranteed sunshine; great food and beaches; charming locals; relatively inexpensive compared to the Indian Ocean islands and only a short flight away. Likewise, since Portugal has technically been a country since 1143, some of the historical sights and landmarks for a honeymoon in Portugal are truly breathtaking.
About the activities:
Honeymoon Portugal offers a broad swathe of things to do, aside from the obvious choice of relaxing on beautiful, sandy beaches. From driving along the scenic roads of Alentejo, learning to surf in Nazaré, visiting the best aquarium in the world (as voted by TripAdvisor) Oceanário, wandering around the stunning town of Óbidos, playing golf in the Algarve or wine tasting in the port regions – there is truly something for everyone.
About the climate:
The summer months (June – August) are the obvious time to go in terms of guaranteed sunshine. However, be warned, the summer months are when all the coastal resorts will be at their busiest, and the prices will go up during this period. Equally, the average temperature of 30 degrees celsius will mean it’ll be too hot to do any trekking or real exploring. If you just want to relax by a pool or on a beach, then this is still a great time to go nonetheless.
If you want to avoid the crowds and are more interested in seeing the sights and immersing yourself in Portugal more, we recommend coming between February – May or September & October when the weather is warm without being excessively hot and the crowds are more relaxed (depending on where you’re going).
What we love:
The food. The Portuguese have an enormously underrated cuisine as they focus on simple, authentic and incredibly delicious dishes. The country is an absolute hub for quality seafood, not to mention the outstanding jamón ibérico and cheeses in Porto, Lisbon and Évora. It is also the land of port wine – and nothing beats a tasting day in the rolling vineyards whilst the sun beaming down.
Take me there!
