We were helped with the planning of our honeymoon by Ambassador Travel in Wantage who could not have been more helpful and informative. I would highly recommended any couple planning their honeymoon to go through a travel agents as it takes a great deal of stress off your shoulders and you will have enough of that to deal with from the wedding!
Our trip started in Kuala Lumpur where we stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel. The hotel was beautiful and the staff were incredibly polite and attentive, nothing was too much trouble for them. It is also in a very central location with both the Petronas and KL towers only a 10 minute walk away. A trip to KL is not complete without a visit the Sky Bar in the Traders tower. There is a swimming pool in the middle of the bar that has plank walks on either side which can be quite tricky to take on in heels! The view of the Petronas Towers at night is out of this world.
After 3 days in Kuala Lumpar, we journeyed down to Malacca where we stayed in the Majestic hotel which comprises of the original serene mansion, dating back to the 1920's which remains at the heart of the hotel.
A new building has also been created, mirroring the original architecture, to house 54 spacious rooms & suites.
The town of Malacca is steeped in history as it was the centre of lucrative spice trade, visited by Arab, Tamil and Chinese merchants and subjected to dominance by the Portuguese, Dutch and British in turn. Each left their mark, creating the unique and enduring allure of the city today. Understandably, the different cultures have had a huge effect on the cuisine of the town and some beautiful food can be sampled from Nyonya cuisine which is a mix of Chinese and traditional Malay cooking, you have to try the Laksa!
We then returned to Kuala Lumpur to take a short flight to Terengganu on the east coast of Malaysia where we stayed in the Tanjong Jara resort. The resort is a sanctuary of luxury and well-being steeped in age-old Malay traditions and was designed to reflect the elegance and grandeur of 17th century Malay palaces. The philosophy of the Resort is as unique as the Resort itself. Based on the Malay concept of Sucimurni, which emphasises purity of spirit, health and well-being, Tanjong Jara encourages true rejuvenation of both body and spirit.
The idea here is to immerse yourself in the local culture. We visited the local fishing village and learnt about traditional Malay fishing methods. We also went to the local food market with chef Ann who taught us about Malay ingredients which we then took back to resort and cooked with her. The on-site naturalist took us to the highest waterfall in Malaysia which was beautiful and fascinating. There are also some excellent local diving sites.
The resort has two restaurants and all the food is locally sourced and incredible, although it is quite expensive along with the alcohol.
Malaysia is an incredibly beautiful country which is made even more special by the people who smile so easily. I would highly recommend it as a honeymoon destination.
