Don't stress, this should be an exciting time!! I went to a wedding last year where there was no top table as such, but the bride and groom sat on a round table with the bridesmaids, best man and their partners. The parents then sat on seperate tables with their immediate relatives.
If you want a top table maybe just have the parents and partners and leave the best man and bridesmaids to sit on the nearest table?

Thanks for your advice, Saffy how funny! - I'm thinking long rather than round is the way forward if we can't find another solution!! We're actually having 4 bridesmaids and 2 best men so with us too that will be a nice figure for one table, I like the idea of the pareents hosting their own tables, hopefully that way they'll keep themselves to themselves! Its just how to approach the subject! eek

My friends suffered with the same problem and eliminated it all together by having a sweetheart table just the 2 of them still placed where there top table would be and the speeches were done from where ever the relevant people were sat but great idea when it comes to difficult relatives and the other nice thing is you're always so busy during the day speaking to others and not actually spending much time together they enjoyed the time to sit quietly by themselves and reflect on the day

i have a similar problem ..my parents dont get on and my mum hates my dads fiancee (understandably so) so im putting grooms dad with my mum and my dad with the grooms mum and their partners are going on tables with my other family from either side who will be on opposite sides of the room with the grooms family in the middle ..it seems a good way to keep them from having to go near each other
