The Dolphin Hotel is a beautiful Grade II listed building located at the heart of Southampton’s Old Town where it has stood for over 600 years, serving as a welcome place to rest for weary travelers. The hotel was first established in 1550 and has a fascinating history. Shakespeare and company performed plays in the inn yard, Thomas Hardy refers to it in Trumpet Major and Jane Austen danced here at Assembly Balls. The hotel was rebuilt in 1775 to accommodate spa visitors and it supposedly has the biggest unsupported bay windows in England; Thackeray sat in one of them to write Pendennis.
It is now home to 99 bedrooms, which due to the hotels age are all unique in size but all offer excellent comforts including, flat screen TVs with Freeview, Iron & Ironing Board, safe, Tea & Coffee making facilities, guest toiletries and complimentary Wi-Fi.
It is also home to the famous Jane Austen Suite. This room draws Jane Austen enthusiasts from all over the world. Adorned with the above mentioned bay windows this room makes for an impressive banqueting room for up to 100 guests. It can also be divided into two separate rooms for smaller more intimate weddings.
Adjoining the Jane Austen Suite there is the equally impressive Gilbert Room which boasts its own bar and serves excellently as a reception room.
