This depends on the scale of your wedding. Most information about venue, date and time would be on the invite. In addition guests may need hotel and taxi information, gift information, and anything else really that you think they should know.

If your wedding is a year or more away then it's probably worth sending save a date cards, especially to those who you really want at your wedding. Invitations can go out up to three months before. But to be honest there are no strict rules these days. If you're getting married quickly after an engagement then send out the invites straight away.
