10 of the hottest honeymoon destinations for 2019
When it comes to honeymoon destinations, there are some crowd favourites that are always going to be popular (we’re looking at you, Maldives!). However, if you’re looking for something a little different for your 2019 getaway, here are the hottest up-and-coming honeymoon destinations…
As it’s not far from its more popular sister, The Maldives, Sri Lanka isn’t far off the beaten track when it comes to romantic getaways. However, it’s a world away when it comes to cultural experiences, incredible landscapes, and adventure activities. From relaxing on one of the island’s stunning white beaches or at a 5* spa to exploring the tea trails and temple-strewn jungles, there’s enough here to keep every couple happy.

One of Africa’s safest destinations and most picturesque countries, Zimbabwe is the perfect honeymoon destination for couples considering a safari honeymoon. Home to stunning national parks (including the wildlife-filled Hwange National Park) and Wonder of the World Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe is ideal for nature-lovers, offers excellent value for money, and gives couples a chance to escape to a romantic lodge deep in the wilderness. Plus, it can easily be combined with a beach break to Mauritius, South Africa or the Seychelles.
Bridging the gap between Central and South America, Panama has transformed in recent years into a picture-perfect beach honeymoon destination, thanks to its glorious tropical climate, lush rainforest, varied wildlife and Spanish colonial architecture. Visit Panama City for a lively and colourful capital brimming with Latin music and delicious food, trek the national park Volcán Barú to visit the country’s only volcano, or island-hop on the San Blas islands off Panama’s beautiful Caribbean coast.
For a honeymoon destination that’s close to home, don’t discount Germany! If you prefer a city honeymoon to a beach break, then you’ll be spoilt for choice, with cities like Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne at your disposal. These cities make fantastic destinations all year round, which is perfect if you’re not looking to honeymoon in the summer, and easily blend distinctive architecture, cultural attractions and delicious food and drink. For a honeymoon destination that’s a little bit different, why not visit the magical castles and lakes surrounding Füssen, the postcard-perfect town of Bamburg (which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site), or the stunning scenery of the Black Forest?
São Tomé and Príncipe
For a tropical island honeymoon that’s truly off the beaten track, then São Tomé and Príncipe could be right up your street! This twin-island nation just off Africa’s Atlantic coast is a relative newcomer to tourism, but its picturesque mix of Portuguese colonial heritage, South African culture and lush volcanic jungle makes it a unique honeymoon destination. It’s ideal for nature-lovers, as activities include hiking through the verdant forests (Obô national park covers 30% of the islands) to spot the many resident species of rare birds, butterflies and orchids, or exploring the tropical beaches on the hunt for turtles.
If you’re looking for an alternative to the popular Mayan Riviera in Mexico, then it’s worth taking a look at its southern sister, Belize. Enjoy diving on the Belize Barrier Reef and at the famous 407-foot-deep Blue Hole, visit ancient Mayan temples and Central America’s highest waterfall, or relax at one of the luxury resorts and tuck into the country’s blend of Caribbean, Mexican and Mayan cuisine.
The hottest new honeymoon city break has to be Singapore, with its glamorous nightlife, excellent food, luxury hotels and world-class shopping. With attractions such as the romantic Sentosa Island (home to Universal Studios Singapore), the futuristic Gardens by the Bay, the incredible landscaping of Bukit Batok Town Park and cruises on the Singapore River, this is an activity-filled honeymoon of a lifetime.
Turkey is quickly regaining popularity as a travel hotspot for 2019, and the Turkish Riviera (also known at the Turquoise Coast) is a brilliantly affordable honeymoon destination. The Turkish Riviera encompasses the stunning Antalya and Muğla provinces, as well as Aydın, southern İzmir and western Mersin, all of which are known for their sunny climates, beautiful blue seas and mountain scenery. There are even two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World here – namely, the Mausoleum of Maussollos in Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus. Our top picks have to be the beautiful city of Antalya, with its historical landmarks and incredible beaches, and the buzzing nightlife of Marmaris.
This surprisingly romantic Middle Eastern destination may have flown under your honeymoon radar, but it definitely shouldn’t be overlooked. You may know it from the pictures of the famous Rose City, Petra, which is truly breathtaking to behold and one of the Modern Seven Wonders of the World. Jordan isn’t all about Petra, though – couples can camp in the amazing red deserts of Wadi Rum (also known as the Valley of the Moon), or head to coast and float in the salty Dead Sea for its rumoured healing properties.
