Designer Wedding Music
Every bride wants her wedding day to be unique. Each element of the big day can be specially created just for you ... whether it be the wedding dress, the flowers or the table decorations. Lucky brides across the Thames Valley can now have “designer” wedding music too, as revealed by Rob Stevens, Director of The Mad Hatter Bands. Rob, a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, has spent his working life as a professional musician, playing with many leading orchestras, and arranging music for all sorts of musical ensembles. “Over the years I’ve arranged lots of music especially for client’s weddings and parties. Some brides dream of gliding down the aisle to a particular piece of music ... but this can be tricky if they’ve chosen a full-blown orchestral piece and have only booked something like a string trio to perform it! I’m frequently asked to arrange favourite songs to suit particular dance styles (e.g. waltz, rumba etc...) and write special versions of tunes to suit people’s chosen ensembles. This sort of work is very specialised and requires careful attention”.
What choice do you have?
But does this flexibility to choose music mean that some people make unusual choices? Rob continued ... “Sometimes! The one that springs to mind was not an unusual piece, but more of an unusual choice for a wedding. My 6-piece dance band were to perform at a reception where the groom wanted us to play a piece called “St James’s Infirmary”. He’d heard this on a TV documentary, absolutely loved it and was adamant that it should be performed. It took me a little while to find the original score, but I arranged it without a problem. It was just the lyrics that surprised me ... particularly as I was going to be singing them. The tune is a classic New Orleans blues, about a man discovering his lover’s body in a hospital morgue! It’s a great piece of music, but it did feel a bit strange singing it at a wedding. I needn’t have worried though, as everyone loved it”!
Rob established The Mad Hatter Bands in 1998, determined to offer clients a range of high quality, professional ensembles and bands, encompassing jazz, covers, dance and classical styles. He also prides himself on offering clients a very special service - “with my training and professional experience I offer my clients all sorts of advice about choosing music for their special day, and it’s not limited to just one particular musical style or type of ensemble. I’ve selected all the bands and ensembles very carefully, so people can feel confident they will receive a quality performance. And because I’ve played at countless events and weddings myself, I’ve got years of practical experience I can share with clients”.
