Travelling to Mexico - Swine Fever Update

Stop
If you are due to get married or are honeymooning in Mexico this summer it is likely that your wedding or holiday could be affected by the recent news that Swine Fever is spreading through Mexico, and in partciular Mexico City and Cancun.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) has now raised its Pandemic Threat Alert to a level 4 (level 6 indicates a pandemic), and advise against all but essential travel to Mexico.

Insurance Claims

If you have got a holiday or wedding to Mexico planned, check your holiday insurance to see if you are eligible for a refund.  Most, but not all, insurance companies are making pay outs for cancelled holidays and if you have booked a package holiday with a member of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) you will be offered either alternative dates or destination for your holiday.

Alternative Wedding and Honeymoon Destinations

If you were honeymooning or getting married in Mexico the chances are you'll want to find another destination that offers both a warm climate and something a little bit different to the usual European resorts.  You may like to consider Thailand, The Caribbean, Dubai, Egypt, or The Seychelles.

Thailand

Temple in Thailand

With the bad press that Thailand has received of late, there has probably never been a better time to visit, with prices in Thailand at their most competitive and visitors at their lowest.  We recently visited the Dusit Thani hotels in Bangkok and Phuket and found them to offer luxurious and relaxing surroundings, with a  wide choice of accommodation and dining experiences.

In order to marry in Thailand you must be resident for at 3-5 days before your wedding, so arranging a wedding at short notice is possible.

The Caribbean

The Caribbean provides almost all-year round sunshine, with a relaxed pace of life.  The 30 Caribbean islands vary in size and culture, so a cruise makes an ideal way to sample some of the islands and to discover sandy beaches, plantation gardens bursting with colour, or crystal clear waterfalls.  If you are thinking of getting married in the Caribbean the legal requirements vary from island to island so best to check with either your tour operator or the Foreign Office for further information.

Dubai

Shopping Bags

With so much shopping to see and do, Dubai doesn't always necesarily make for a relaxing honeymoon!  Temperatures are constantly in the mid to high thirties so spending some time in a cool air-conditioned shopping mall can be a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Egypt

Pyramids
With its history and exoticism, Egypt is an unforgettable honeymoon destination.  What could be more romantic than a cuise along the River Nile and a chance to watch the sun setting over the pyramids.  Alternatively what about a diving holiday in the beach resort of Sharm El Sheikh.

Seychelles

Beautiful Beach
Quite simply the most romantic honeymoon destination imaginable.  Crystal clear waters breaking on pure white sandy beaches and palm trees swaying in a gentle breeze.  However the legal requirements for a civil marriage in The Seychelles are that copies of your passport and birth certificate need to be submitted at least 6 weeks prior to a wedding date, so unfortunately this is not a great option for a quickly organised wedding.
