Live Music or DJ?

Hello everyone,

I'd like to hear your opinion on the wedding reception entertainment. Which one is better: live music or DJ?

It depends alot, and budget probably makes most peoples decisions!
I think live bands provides a sort of atmosphere, like any live music would, although sometimes it feels more formal than just DJs taking requests, playing the usual dancing regulars!

I personally won't have a band, as there haven't been any I've seen and gone "WOW I want them at my wedding," which I think is important as they can be pretty expensive. And I read in a magazine they can be pretty demanding too!

I suppose it depends as well how formal/informal you're wedding will be, or want it to be.
The more laid back weddings have always had DJ's, just my personal experience though.

Hello,
I think the best part of marriage is the way you enjoy and according to me the best is DJ because its have all the stuff we need .Live music is also not a bad idea but i mostly preferred the DJ.

Thank you girls. I'm a videographer and I've filmed both, so I wanted to hear the opinion of brides/brides-to-be....

Do you know any website with details and contacts of DJs and bands?

What I have found is that with live bands they cannot play all evening, so when they stop for a break you will need to have some other type of music. The bands that I have considered all have a music system with them and will fill that gap with pre-recorded music.
The other thing that I have considered is hiring a juke box, so again when the band stops the guests can choose their own music. Bit of a fun idea!

As a mobile wedding DJ, DJs can normally offer a lot more eg: uplighting help planning ect and most of the time a band will use a dj or a ipod to play band brakes as they cant play all night, i play band brakes for a band i know, they use my uplighting as most bands only have stage lighting.

Subway Band are an Oxfordshire based female fronted 4 piece live covers band and we play an eclectic mix of exciting covers from 60's through to current chart hits. We have been established since 2003 and are all really experienced in the craft of delivering a bespoke wedding package to suit each individual bride and groom.

So really the answer to your question is Subway use a bit of both as our lighting engineer doubles as our DJ during our breaks in performance. We can give a same day quotation and availability too, contact us via this site.

I've got live music - a violinist called Simon Jordan who is playing classical music for my ceremony and then on into my reception with music like Jack Johnson, Take That and Nirvana. I get to pick the music and he came to audition for me - such a nice gentleman.

I could go either way. It depends on how good the DJ is and how good the live music is. LOL There is so many options that I would just have to hear a wide selection before making my choice.

Definitely go for a live band. Your guests will really remember the evening, and a good band is so much better at getting people on their feet and dancing.

I always find the break between sets is much needed for guests to have a break from dancing, and the fact that a lot of people leave the dance floor when it swaps from live music to DJ shows how popular the live sets are.

Have you heard been to any of their gigs? Are their videos on YouTube?

We went to a wedding fayre and got a demo cd of a local band but it is impossible to tell what they are like from that, but I suppose a video would be better.

I think DJ is the best option for Wedding. Disc jockeys are artists in their own right, offering balanced and eclectic mixes of musical styles for all ages. Moreover DJs generally cost less, and prices vary depending on equipment requests and whether it's a weekday or a weekend.

We hired a band and Fun wedding photos at our wedding. I cant recommend them enough as they both worked really well together. Fun wedding photos were great and provide a studio and massive fancy dress box for fun pics. These kept our guests entertained.

I am not sure if they would travel as far as you, but I would try asking them.

Jane

Definitely a live wedding band. It is so much more an "event" and a band is much better at getting people dancing.

Shindigz band all the way for me. I heard them at Milton Hill wedding fair this weekend and they are brilliant. If we hadn't already booked a band for my wedding we would of had these but we would loose our deposit. Think they are on this website somewhere.

Hi All,

As a Singer I am slightly biased! but I say why not have both!?

The good and the bad.......

From my experience Bands are very expensive and although I have worked with some fabulous musicians, quite a number of bands out there aren't as good live as on their demos. That said, there is nothing quite like live music to get the party started whether it be a full band or a solo singer.

The same goes for a DJ, I work alongside some excellent ones with fab set ups and a flair for either comparing or mixing (and if your lucky - both!) who know how to keep the party going all night. But then I have also witnessed DJ's with bad equipment or no actual DJ skills!

As mentioned I am a singer and I have performed at hundreds of weddings and have found the reaction is phenomenal, people love nothing more than having a good boogie with me! and then once I have everyone on the dance floor I will pass over to the DJ to go on till the early hours. Also the first dance is a memorable moment that I think is made all the more special when sang live.

At my own wedding I did the same thing, I had a singer interspersed with a DJ, because I wanted the best of both; live music but at half the cost of a band and a DJ to play the more clubby dance stuff and any random requests that the singer wouldn't necessarily have!

My final piece of advice........... always see a band/ singer perform live, if possible also see the DJ at a gig or alternatively go on recommendation. And stick to what you love, there is no point booking a normal function band/ singer if you and your partner only enjoy heavy metal!

Good luck!

Gemma Samuels - vocalist

My suggetion is to opt for Live music rather than any band/DJ. For live music hiring singing waiters is an excellent idea.. I have watched their performance.. they were talented and were absolutely amazing. They can bring charm at your special event with the help of a new form of talent that is sure to impress the entire crowd.
