About Hedingham Castle

Hedingham Castle, at the centre of a private estate surrounded by stunning countryside, is one of the most unique wedding venues in the country. A romantic fairytale setting, because a magnificent marriage begins in a magnificent place. Hedingham Castle is a historic wedding venue nestled in the charming village of Sible Hedingham on the Essex-Suffolk border in England, featuring a 900-year-old Norman Keep and a grand Georgian country manor house.

Ceremonies take place in the timeless, candle-lit magnificence of the Banqueting Hall within the 900 year old Castle where the Earls of Oxford entertained royalty, with capacity for 100 seated guests and 30 more looking down from the Minstrels' Gallery.

Receptions are held in our permanent Ballroom Marquee on the Tulip Lawn, where up to 150 people can dine in classic English style. Drinks are served beforehand in the Great Hall of the Georgian House overlooking the immaculate lawns leading down to the tree-lined lake. In summer, guests can take their glasses outside around the fountain on the lawn. In winter a huge log fire adds warmth and romance to the timeless atmosphere of the English Country House.

For more intimate weddings, you can choose to hold your entire day within the Castle itself. The exquisite Tapestry Room provides a magical setting for up to 70 guests to dine in a setting of medieval splendour, with a fully stocked bar and dancing through the evening on the Garrison Floor.

At the end of the evening, a gentle drive through the Lord's Orchard takes the newly married couple to The Garden Cottage for their first evening together. The Medieval Lodge, sleeping up to 17, can also be booked for friends and family.

Brand new for 2023 is the Royal Chamber, a luxurious honeymoon retreat situated inside the Castle itself. The only modern bedroom in a Norman Keep in the
country, staying in The Royal Chamber is a unique and treasured experience. Featuring a colossal four-posted bed, luxurious double bath and exquisite original features, this is the perfect sanctuary for those who adore the history and atmosphere of the Castle.

FAQs

Yes, we only ever host one wedding per day. This allows the team to give you their complete attention throughout the day.

We are fully licensed for ceremonies, which take place in the breathtaking Banqueting Hall in the Castle. You can then choose to hold your reception in the Castle (guest numbers and wedding date permitting) or in the Ballroom Marquee, so guests do not have to leave the estate until the partying is over at midnight.

No

Corkage options are available and the team will be happy to discuss these with you.

We have a selection of three fantastic catering providers for you to choose from, all of which can provide extensive menus and offer tastings, and can be flexible to your requirements. We do not allow any external catering apart from your wedding cake.

You can access the venue from 9.30am on the day of the wedding. If there is no wedding or event booked the day before you can set up from noon until 4pm on that day (this cannot be guaranteed until nearer the time).

Guests must leave the venue by midnight.

A full band is fine in the Ballroom Marquee, as we have a designated space. Bands are not permitted in the Castle due to space and access limitations, however a small acoustic trio or quartet would be fine. The Ballroom Marquee the limiter is set to 96 decibels which is always ample even for live music.
