There has been a growing trend in the last year for ‘English’ flowers and natural designs. However there are various meanings for this:
True English flowers are UK grown, seasonal and are reliant on the UK weather conditions; delphinium, lily of the valley, freesias and sweet peas to name but a few. However the down side of this is that when we have a bad spring (such as this year) the seasons can be behind and therefore flowers a bride has requested may not be in flower yet, or if seasons are ahead of themselves and flowers that would normally be available in mid June have already flowered and finished by May.

Giant balloons

Giant balloons have become very popular over the last 12 months for UK weddings.
As these are very large balloons, they are not the most inexpensive option available, (each one using the same helium as 15 ‘normal’ balloons) but WOW do they have some impact and used carefully, small numbers of these balloons will really transform your venue.
Blank canvas venues

Swapping a London-based career in Interior Design for a move to the country and the decision to host weddings, more than ten years ago now, we thought the two or three we might host each year would be a pleasure and a way to regenerate the house and grounds.
Because we didn’t have the experience or the contacts or the budget for anything much of our own we offered the grounds and barn at Friars Court as a ‘blank canvas’. More by accident than design that approach carved a unique niche for us; since then we’ve discovered the significant demand from couples eager to have something ‘different’, something that’s personal to them.
For a bride, a ‘blank canvas’ allows her a greater degree of autonomy and freedom but that freedom is no “free lunch”: it means liaising with each and every supplier rather than purely with the clip-board-wielding event manager of an in-house team. So coordinating several suppliers equals work, time but, hopefully, not too much added stress. We’ve built up a really lovely group of suppliers over the years, most of them have now all worked together on the same weddings (some have even had their own weddings here) so there is more of a ‘team spirit’ which should help the wedding almost, as one bride put it, plan itself. Feeling Blue…
Posted in Advice for Brides, Bridal fashion, Latest Gossip, The Ceremony, Venue Decorating Tags: brides, Something Blue, wedding, wedding ceremony, wedding dresses, wedding flowers, wedding ideas, wedding traditions
Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something Blue….
This old rhyme still rings strong and therefore it is nice to think of unique ideas for each. It is a wedding tradition not only talked about on the day but also in years to come. So here are a few ideas to spark some inspiration when choosing ‘something blue’!
You could have something subtle for example blue confetti or a blue ribbon around your bouquet. You could go blooming blue with a blue floral arrangement or blueberries in the dessert. You could wear blue by painting your nails with blue polish, blue eye shadow or blue stones in your jewellery. How about blue shoes or a blue purse? Why not choose something a bit more secretive, just for you and your groom, for example a blue petticoat, blue garter or blue lingerie!
If you don’t want to wear blue yourself, you could have blue balloons or blue chair covers. You could even tie blue ribbons round your wedding favours!
The list is just endless. Its not something you need to feel blue about so let your imagination run wild.
What will you choose?
Lily bouquets

We all loved the concept of this stunning lily bouquet, made by carefully dismantling lilies and re-wiring the petals.
While unique concepts like this can have copyright issues if copied by another florist, from what we can ascertain the creator of this design is Surrey Wedding Flowers from West Byfleet, and the company no longer seems to be trading.
A similar effect can be achieved with different types of blooms with robust petals that are not liable to wilt too quickly.
Wedding “Mad Libs”
Posted in Advice for Brides, Great ideas, Latest Gossip, The Ceremony & Reception, Venue Decorating Tags: reception ideas, trends, wedding ideas, wedding mad lib, wedding stationery
Mad Libs have always been popular in the USA as a fun way for children to learn about adjectives nouns and verbs by inserting them as appropriate – or as inappropriate – into a pre-written paragraph.
We thought this wedding Mad Lib would be a fun alternative to a guest book at receptions as a lasting, and amusing, memento of your guests. Leave them on the tables for guests to complete when they first sit down as they will act as a great icebreaker at the start of the meal.
Create your own version or order from Weddings by Lilly. It is an American web site, however owner Lilly Childers is happy to ship to Guides for Brides followers in the UK.
Table place settings
Posted in Advice for Brides, Great ideas, The Ceremony & Reception, Venue Decorating Tags: place settings, wedding venue decoration
We love the detailed ranges of place settings by Intricate Creations, offering a very sophisticated look to your table.
For those planning to make their own place settings, it is time to get creative and be inspired:
- Make mini Plastercine figures holding a name flag ; your guests will enjoy making new figures during the meal.
- Personalised chocolate bars can double up as place cards and favours.
- Ask guests to email you a photo of them as a child (or find embarrassing photos on Facebook) and stick that to a card place setting as a great ice breaker.
- Food Art; ask your caterers to pipe names onto the plates with a balsamic reduction; it could even form part of the starter.
- Use scrabble pieces for fun and informal place settings that the guests can have fun with during the meal.
Remember: If your guests don’t know each other it is helpful to design place settings that the other guests can see during the meal.
Countdown to Trudi’s wedding; Never work with animals
Posted in Advice for Brides, Day to Day Life at GfB, The Ceremony & Reception, Venue Decorating Tags: guides for brides
Every wedding has a different set of challenges to overcome in the run up, and marquee weddings definitely invite more than their fair share.
Location, location, location is key, and we were all delighted that Trudi chose the grounds surrounding the Guides for Brides offices at Larkhill Farm to pitch her marquee. Like all farms, Larkhill Farm is home to various animals.
Marquee preparations were interrupted today by one of the dogs choosing to decorate the marquee floor in her own unique way. Having been chased out of the marquee they discovered to their delight that a gate had been left open and freedom was theirs.
One of the resident horses then took flight at the sight of the gently flapping marquee and attempted, only partly successfully, to jump a 5 bar gate. Another interruption to help free the wildly flailing horse from her precarious position suspended by her hind legs.
Of course the advantage to the farm setting is all the lovely fresh eggs; no problem in supplying a couple of dozen free range chicken eggs to be whipped into pavlovas tonight. The dozen ducks eggs for the vegetarian quiche are more of a challenge thanks to a fox who visited today taking all but one of the ducks. We suspect the remaining duck is actually a drake and may not be much help for laying eggs….
Countdown to Trudi’s wedding: Marquees and mayhem
Posted in Advice for Brides, Real Weddings, The Ceremony & Reception, Venue Decorating
For anyone planning a marquee wedding, it is only when the lorry rolls up the drive and the clanging of marquee poles begins that it all becomes real. The lovely chaps from Rent a Tent Marquees are transforming a patch of grass outside our office into a stunning fabric clad wedding venue, and the portable toilets from D & P Luxury Toilets are being manoeuvred into position.
One advantage of a marquee wedding is that a bride can be in charge of exactly how it will look, and Trudi has arranged for tables, chairs, crockery, cutlery and table linen from Oxford Event Hire to be delivered the day before so that tables can be laid up ready.
With less than 48 hours to go we are praying that our huge bank of garden roses will suddenly burst into full bloom in time. Foxgloves and Roses are happy to use our own flowers for the marquee decoration, which were in full bloom this time last year, but are not quite convinced it is summer yet. There are some things you just can’t control!
Marquee inspiration

Who says marquee wedding receptions need to feature ivory drapes and white tablecloths?
This effective is not expensive to achieve; bright table cloths instead of plain white, and strings of single bulbs with cheap coloured paper light shades around instead of chandeliers. Striking flower arrangements complete the look.
This couple have shaved a huge chunk from their budget by dispensing with expensive flooring, wall linings and chair covers, yet the over all effect oozes style and extravagance.
