- Ancient Rome: the bride’s face was covered with a veil as it was believed evil spirits would be attracted to her - the veil was then used to conceal her features.
- Medieval times - the veil was a symbol of chastity, modesty and purity and would be used to protect the bride from “the evil eye”
- Arranged marriage: Some say that the bridal veil was created due to the circumstances of an arranged marriage. Men would ask a lady’s father for their hand in marriage and only after the ceremony would the veil be lifted to reveal the bride’s appearance.
